WALKING AGAIN AFTER A LIFE-THREATENING POLYTRAUMA INJURY

Successful Spine & Femur Surgery in a Single Sitting at Saraf Hospital, Gwalior

A 22-year-old male patient met with a major accident and initially received treatment elsewhere only for a femur fracture. However, despite severe weakness in both lower limbs and inability to control bowel and bladder functions, the associated spinal injury remained undiagnosed.

Five days after injury, the patient presented to Saraf Hospital, Gwalior, where detailed clinical evaluation by Dr. Aman Saraf – Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon raised suspicion of a serious spinal injury. After comprehensive radiological workup, the patient was diagnosed with:

✅ Burst fracture of L1 vertebra
✅ Femur shaft fracture
✅ Paraparesis of both lower limbs
✅ Loss of bowel and bladder control

Considering the severity of injuries and neurological deficit, meticulous pre-operative planning was done and the patient underwent single sitting surgery for both injuries including:

✔ Spine fixation and decompression surgery
✔ Femur interlocking nailing

The patient was mobilised and allowed to bear weight with walker support from the very next day after surgery, avoiding prolonged bed rest and its complications.

Remarkable Recovery

✅ Gradual neurological improvement after surgery
✅ Recovery of lower limb weakness within 4 weeks
✅ Regained bowel and bladder control
✅ Walking comfortably without support at 4 weeks post surgery

This case highlights the critical importance of:

• Thorough clinical evaluation in polytrauma patients
• Early diagnosis of associated spinal injuries
• Timely surgical intervention
• Single sitting management of multiple fractures for faster rehabilitation
• Early mobilisation and avoidance of prolonged bed rest

The entire treatment was successfully performed under Ayushman Bharat Yojana at Saraf Hospital, Gwalior.
